Hi Katie, here's exactly how to drill into acrylic. Those floating frames are really cool - I might have to try making one too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH3u8m_kCu0
Here's a link. The trick is to use painter's tape and take your time. Good luck with your project!

The secret I have found on drilling into anything like this (glass, acrylic, porcelain) is two fold: 1-make sure you have correct drill bit (material and size) and 2-place painter's tape on the section before you drill. This should help to prevent cracking and splintering.
I am right there with you, 57 years young and trying to stay ahead of mother nature & father time.

Tape the acrylic where you want to drill. Go slow. if the acrylic is thin it can be pulled up by the bit as it goes through and crack it. Go too fast and the friction can crack it. Thicker material 1/4"+ can be easily drilled through just go slow. What I have done with thin material is sandwich it between two pieces of scrap wood where i want to drill. Never had a problem this way.

Hi Katie, so sorry to hear your hands and giving you trouble and good on you for pushing through and being so positive. You're an inspiration. Both Betsy and William have given great advice on how to how about drilling holes. Just in case you want to see it in action, here's a great video that will show you how - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH3u8m_kCu0. They also tell you more about what drill bit to use. Good luck and I can't wait to see your gnomes.
Hello, Why do you need to drill acrylic?
Put a piece of acrylic inside of a picture frame and stick in place with glue or double sided tape. Make a 4 sided box with a base and hinge it to the frame or stick it to the frame once you have enclosed your item to be displayed.
You could try a bit in a rotary tool — it’s mostly about speed (high) and not forcing it, letting the bit do the work for you.
