I have seen posts recommending ammonia to clean cast iron. Will that remove the sticky residue that collects on them & the burner caps?

Hi,
Soak overnight in Soapy water to loosen the grease. Use a "Brillo" pad (wire wool) to remove the burnt on stuff. Hope that helps
Take the grates off and put them in a heavy duty freezer gallon bag (usually 1/bag), add 1/2 cup ammonia and seal it up. Let set outside overnight. The fumes work to loosen the built up grime. In the morning, wearing plastic gloves and eye protection, remove the grates and wash off with warm soapy water. I do half the grates at a time so I have something to cook on.
I soak mine in hot water and a grease-cutting dish soap.
They’re removable right? Try soaking them in hot water and heavy duty dish soap. Then scrub with a brush - even an old toothbrush. You may have to repeat the process a few times.
Clean as if they were grill grates. Remove from the stove. If they are extreme as you indicated, soak in a degreaser solution. Then scrub with warm soapy water (blue Dawn is my preference) and a stiff scrub brush.
The process is simple. Clean off whatever you can with soap and warm water, gently scrubbing each grate one at a time. Then wet some baking soda with water and mix until it forms a thick paste. Apply this paste directly to the burners.

I just soak mine in the kitchen sink with water, white vinegar and baking soda. If really bad, place in a garbage bag with a bottle of ammonia and let sit overnight, preferably outside. And when you think about it, smush the bag around a bit so ammonia touches every surface. In the morning, rinse with the garden hose, then take in and wash and dry. I save the ammonia in the original bottle if not too yucky for the next round. If not reusable, still place back in original bottle and store with your hazardous waste until your next drop off.
I do this all the time. I clean off the grates with a scraper when bad. Then I spray Easy Off or Heavy Duty Grill cleaner on the grates.Put then in a big plastic bag and seal tight. Let the bag sit in the sun for several hours. I usually do this in the morning and by night time they are ready. Open the bag and rinse off the residue. EASY PEASY. And works every time.
Hi Kathy, hope this helps you out, If your grates or caps are very dirty, create a paste by mixing three parts baking soda to one part water. Coat the grates in this mixture and set aside for 20 minutes. Wipe down the burners with a soft cloth. If you have coated the burners in baking soda paste, rinse this off first to avoid damaging the finish.
Put the grates into a zip lock bag with enough ammonia to cover let sit over night. The gunk will wipe right off but do this outside because this has a strong smell.
I usually put them in the dishwasher though that may not be the most correct way.
Thanks for the responses, I'm sure I can now get them clean.
