What type of molding? Wood trim? If yes, and there is a damaged or missing piece you can use hot glue or clay that hardens to make a pattern. Put either on to a good piece and let set up. Peel the glue or clay mold off and fill with wood putty and make a new piece to patch up the old on. Glue it on sand lightly and paint.
Hi Sharon, depending on how big of a patch you're dealing with you may be able to find similar molding that you could modify with wood putty.
Is it painted or finished natural? That makes a difference for how to patch it. Painted is way easier!
Hello. Are we talking about interior or exterior molding? What kind of molding? More information might be useful.
I know in the outdoor situation with wood rot we have had to patch exterior entry doorway molding and replace it due to water intrusion and exposure. In this case we used a pressure treated wood. Also Bondo or epoxy putty can assist with the repair.
Please post a picture so that we can see what kind of damage you are talking about. There are different options.

If possible take a small sample of what you are trying to match with you when you shop at your local home improvement store OR at the very least a picture and the height, etc of the molding. If it is very decorative, do a google search of some sites online.
