It's going to depend on how you plan to use the yard, if you want to use it or just landscape it, how much sunlight or shade is there, and how much you plan on investing your time to maintain it. Once you figure those out, it should be easier to determine what you need.
You could make a border around it then fill with soil and plant something that will be "OK" with the type of tree you have.
It depends on your sun light or shade as to what plants you could put around the tree- you could plant mondo grass it grows well in sun or shade and looks nice and low maintenance
you could just put pine straw or mulch around the tree or plants like impatients that like shade - I would not use things like ivy or wisteria it will kill the tree and make a mess too

Hi Vienna, you can start by digging out any lawn that may be there, then surround the base of the tree with some nice stacking blocks or landscape ties to separate them from the grassy area. Consider including some fast-spreading groundcovers for a quick cover, but use caution with this. Plants such as pachysandra, ivy, and ribbon grass (Phalaris arundinacea) will take over the entire yard. Plant such as Ginger (Asarum), columbine (Aquilegia), and bleeding heart (Dicentra) are better choices
Hi Vienna,
Use a sponge brush to do this job!

Hello Vienna,
