How do I fix this deck painting disaster?
I need to suggestions please! We have an old deck. We had to replace damaged railings and have decided to go with black metal railings. Decided to refresh the deck at the same time and since it is old Rustoleum’s deck resurfacer was suggested. Chose what looked like a light tan and it looks lavender next to my ivory house. It needs a second coat and the railings haven’t gone up so now is decision time. What color can I choose to fix this. There are footing pillars, fascia, stairs and decking . The house is ivory, black roof and shutters, and white trim. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

It really doesnt look that bad in the photo. But I get it if you don’t love it. Ivory and grey are tricky together. You may want to recover it with something warmer like a brown.
I am sorry you used the product. I hope you don't have the problems people have had along with a lot of Hometalkers. The deckover products usually need two coats to get the color you want.
There is a problem with the deckover products. They are known to crack and peel within two years. Hard to remove. Many Hometalkers have used them and regret it and have mention their misfortunes in discussions. Many people had to replace deck boards and even complete decks. There are class action lawsuits against the manufacturers. Also notice they are not advertised anymore. You can do some online research and find more cons than pros. I have been advising Hometalkers not to use the products and to spread the word. Some have tried scraping and sanding with fair results.
Lots of law firms with class action lawsuits.

If it’s not too late to remove that product, do so and go with a solid color stain instead like a Cabot.
You can rent a floor sander at Home Depot or similar. It will do a good job except in tight corners where you'll have to use another type of sander. People have had somewhat good results pouring boiling water on the product. Let sit 10-15 minutes and scrape all the loose stuff off. Your best solution may be to remove the boards and flip them over to start fresh.
Hi Kristen, you should be able to do one more coat of a grey in any shade light medium or dark. It stays on the color palette you have and will look clean.
I used deck over and had the same problem. I called the company and they refunded my money as long as I had the receipt which I did. I was very disappointed.
Hi,
Try a darker colour, by adding black or dark red to your paint. Try a little, test and then when happy go ahead and do it all. Best wishes
I spoke with someone at the paint store and they said there was something wrong. They replaced the paint and I’m starting over with a stain several shades darker for coverage. Thanks for the info!
Looks like you are at a crossroads, whether to strip it off by sanding (remaining color will be seen between the boards) or to paint with a more compatible color to take away the lavender you now see. It may create a trial and error situation until you find the right blend to fix this. Get some samples of a deeper gray and do small test spots and go with what works, stick with the same brand for compatibility.
So glad you were able to get help from the paint store. That's a great lesson in going back for advice, it never hurts and sometimes you get the help you need.
Glad the paint store helped you, however there is a class action suit against this product. I would rent a sander from Home Depot or Lowes and strip off all the paint. I would let it dry completely after stripping and get something like Thompsons Water sealer in the color of your choice. I would call Rustoleum and ask for my money back.
How about a gray color?
