DIY Citrus Room Spray
Today we are sharing a really easy, wonderful smelling DIY citrus room spray you can use all spring and summer!
This one is slightly different than many of our homemade room sprays on Chemistry Cachet, so be sure to go to the blog post (https://chemistrycachet.com/diy-citrus-room-spray/ ) to learn why each ingredient is used.
Everything has a special purpose and science behind it. More videos and details on Instagram (username alexis.roch).
The first part of this solution requires infusing the witch hazel with lemon peels for two weeks to get the optimum scent and benefits just FYI!
Why even used the lemon and orange peels? Several reason. It is a good way to use leftover peels. If you eat oranges or use lemons in cooking, save the peels for this. Another reason is the unique scent it has! The essential oils provide a lingering scent in the air after you spray, but the lemon peels infused inside the witch hazel has a completely separate scent. If you make this solution, you will see what I mean. You can do this without the lemon and orange peels, but I think it adds a special freshness to this. Read the blog post for more on this :)
Ingredients:
- 2 cups witch hazel** ( Must be alcohol based, learn more in blog post here)
- 2 lemons peeled
- 2 oranges peeled
- 25 drops orange essential oil
- 25 drops lemon essential oil
- 1/2 cup water
- Glass jar with lid
- Glass spray bottle
Directions:
- First, add the lemon and orange peels along with witch hazel to a jar. Allow to infuse for 2 weeks.
- After the two weeks, strain the peels and add the witch hazel mix to a glass jar.
- Add in water, lemon oil, and orange oil (increase amount of essential oils as much as you want to desired scent).
- Shake gentle before each spray.
This is the peels for infusing into the witch hazel.

Great recipe. I just use vodka and essential oils. I don't see the reason of using the citrus peels when using essential oils.

I believe the actual zest from the fresh fruit adds a much more pleasant scent.

I like the idea, but see no reason to purchase essential oils, the peels should do the trick

If you want a lingering, stronger scent, the oils are very necessary for a room spray. If you head to the blog post, right below the recipe, I have a section about why I use both the peels and the oils. The peels cut out the witch hazel scent to neutralize it, the oils are stronger scented lingering in the air: https://chemistrycachet.com/diy-citrus-room-spray/

Have a question about this project?
Will this stain or leave a sticky residue on fabric?
The directions say to use lemon and orange peels but the picture shows zested fruits. Which do you use, whole peels or just the zest?
