How can I use painters drop cloth to reupholster a sofa??
I just bought a camel back sofa with beautiful legs for 50 bucks. I am thinking about using painters drop cloth to use as a fabric. I would like to paint the drop cloth a med. gold color but I am not sure this is a good idea. I would like to have the thoughts on this idea from the many talented ladies I keep reading about on Hometalk. How I envy what these women can do.

Hi Doris,
Here's some facts-pros and cons-about drop cloths even before painting them. Many things to consider for performance. I have never painted (deliberately) a drop cloth so I can't offer info on that part for your project. Hopefully other Hometalkers can advise you.

Yes what a fabulous economical use of fabric. I would suggest prewashing. It also makes nice banners and garden flags.
Canvas is meant to be painted a primer might make your colored paint go farther. It could be a stiff result painted project.
The major cost with a reupholstered furniture job is the reupholstery itself. Unless you are planning to do this yourself? That said, I would find upholstery fabric you love before you do it. Itās a big job! So you could experiment with paint on drop cloth, but Iām not sure it will wear well enough to keep you happy with it long. :)
Once again, I agree with Frugal. Since youāre going to have a lot of hours in this project, consider buying upholstery fabric thatās on clearance, because you donāt want to do all that labor again in 2-3 years.
While determining how/where youāre going to attach the upholstery and shopping for an electric staple gun, you might want to consider a slip cover concept.
In any case, I would pre-wash the fabric, as step one.
I just ordered a slip cover from amazon about an hour ago. Cost right at $30 and it is made for the shape of my couch.
Here is a video on how to make them (no sew)... I would maybe advise NOT painting, I just think it'll make the fabric stiff. I would instead get some gold accent pillows! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMwM5UZNyhQ&t=69s
I would just find the right color of material to use rather then try to paint fabric
I think Carrie's idea above is perfect. Keep the neutral color of the cloth and add gold accents. An entire gold couch may be overwhelmingly bright anyway.
Hello Doris,
How about starting by Dying it the colour you want rather than paining it!
