Super Simple Patriotic Window Valence

Looking for a fun way to dress up your windows? This easy, inexpensive valence will add some seasonal flair in no time!

I came across this great variety of fat quarters at my local Walmart, and I immediately started brainstorming how I could use them in my crafts and around my home to add some patriotic touches. This adorable little valence is so easy to make, costs under ten dollars, and you can change it out to your liking for the next season or holiday.

Materials Needed:

Fabric quarters in Multiple Patterns and/or colors

Curtain Rod (I used a sash rod for this project)

Tools Needed:

Scissors

Measuring Tape (optional)

Step 1

Fold your first piece of fabric in half and cut along the crease. Repeat with the cut pieces, folding and cutting them in half again and again until your pieces are 1 1/2″-2″ wide. Don’t forget to cut off any unnecessary edges before making your main cuts. Repeat with the rest of your fabric quarters.

I realized early on that I wouldn’t need nearly as much fabric for my 36″ window as I had prepared to use. Four pieces was all I needed. Once you’ve finished making all of your cuts you can either proceed to knotting them onto your rod or run them through the washer and dryer to encourage fraying. I did that because I wanted the edges to have more of a weathered look to them.

Step 2

Sort your fabric strips according to how you’d like your pattern sequence to look. While all of my patterns are very similar, I wanted to alternate them in a way that would break up the two patterns with the American flags in them.

Step 3

Take your first fabric strip, fold in half, and lay the folded end over the curtain rod away from you. This will create a nicer looking knot when done. Next, pull the two loose ends through the loop, pulling tightly to the rod to secure.

Repeat will all of your pieces or until you have the fullness you desire for your valence, and hang. Simple as that! My Kenny seems to like it!

I hope you enjoyed my easy idea and will try it out for yourself! I’m already thinking ahead to what I want to do for the fall!
