Hi Marie, yes you can. Do you perhaps have a picture you could share or can you tell us what the pannelling is made from?
Hello, Yes you can, If polished wood, use Chalk paint and then seal with a clear or antique wax.
Yes. It must be cleaned well and primed before painting. Here's a link:

Hello
Proper prep can yield a successful job.
After walls are clean —prime and paint.
We have a log cabin and too much wood is dark and dreary.
We are quite pleased the previous homeowner placed paneling over natural cedar logs in two bedrooms and painted it a light color. I would suggest not to hesitate to your paint paneling for a room brightening update. Our paneling grooves are not filled and I feel its a huge improvement.
I think you’ll be really pleased with your results. Best wishes in your painting adventure!

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Painting Wood Paneling
Hi Marie, You absolutely can paint paneling. Clean it well first and then apply a primer such as Kilz. Then apply the wall paint in the color of your choice. You'll be amazed at how it updates and freshens your room! I've done in two different homes.
Here are instructions from Home Depot:

Sure can! Clean it well, let it dry, add a couple coats of a quality primer then paint.
The cleaning and prep makes all the difference in getting good results. If the paneling has been up a while, there is a good chance that there is cleaning oils on the surface of the wood. So the TSP is a critical step in getting the paneling clean. Also choose a good quality primer, Kilz is one of the many. And put a good coat of prime. If needed put two coats on. It does make a difference with the final result. If the surface of the paneling is really shiny, the TSP should help on knocking that down, But a light sanding with 220 sand paper may be something you want to consider just to be sure you do not end up with peeling paint later down the road. A 3/4 inch nap roller should be fine in getting between the gaps on the wood. You may be better served however by using a brush to really fill those spaces up good with the prime also. All depends upon the depth of the groves in the panel.
Yep you sure can. You need to clean it get all the grime and grease off. I would use Krud Kutter. Then use a good stain blocking primer, Kilz or BIN 123. Paint with a soft roller not the kind you get in the dollar store. A Purdy would be good. If you want to you can fill in the gaps with wood putty, but that is so unnecessary. More work, because then you have to sand it down. Painting will make it look like shiplap.
Yes you surely can. If you are to paint for wood paneling, make sure to choose between a stain-blocking latex primer or an oil-based primer. Just apply a thin coat of primer with a roller. Use a brush to fill in any grooves. Allow the primer to dry a full 24 hours before painting over it.
Yes I have done it and it comes nice you could leave lines in it or sparkle them away then paint
I painted my neighbors for her since she was always complaining it was too dark in her living room. I used Kitchen & Bath semi-gloss paint and added 1/2 c baking soda to make it look like chalk paint. Looked great and she can wipe it off if needed.
Here's a post that might help https://www.hgtv.com/design/decorating/design-101/painting-wood-paneling#:~:text=Prime%20the%20paneling%20with%20a,%2F8%2Dinch%20roller%20cover.&text=Now%20paint%20the%20paneling%20with%20an%20interior%20latex%20paint.
Sure! It's a great way to brighten up a room at a small cost and not having to tear off the paneling!
Yes. Just clean it and then prime it before you try and paint it.
