I tried this myself but found it was more time consuming and costly than buying detergent in the stores and it is not really good for HE washers (high efficency)
1 cup Borax
1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1 bar Fels Naptha
Water
You can add 10-15 drops of essential oils if you want a scent
Grate bar soap and add 4 cups HOT water in a large pot. Heat on stove until soap is melted. Pour into a 5 gallon bucket. Add Borax & Washing Soda and mix until dissolved.
Add water to the 5 gallon mark (you will want to mark ahead of time where 5 gallons hits since buckets aren't exactly that size). Cover and sit for 12 hours then stir again.
This is a concentrated mix so fill your laundry dispenser 1/2 full of mix then 1/2 of water.
Use 1/2 cup for top load, 1/4 cup for front load
In an empty 1 gallon water bottle (with its cap):
1 cup Borax + 1 cup Washing Soda + 1/2 cup salt. shake dry ingredients to mix.
1 pint Pinalen + hot water to fill bottle within 2” of the top.
shake to mix.
Sometimes the Borax will settle to the bottom and so re-shake before use.
Concentrated, so I use half of normal detergent.
