Sounds like you are referring to a specific project, you'd have to ask the presenter what they used or look under the resources section after the project, click on the item to the tight and it will take your to the link. I did some research and hope this is the project you liked:

Hanging Patio Lantern for 2 Dollars.
You'll need to ask your question on the actual project. This is a forum for general diy questions and the creator of the project may not see your question here.
Yes, totally agree with the above statements. You may directly raise the question to the particular project you are referring to.
I think that 3/8" would work best for that project.

Depending on what you're trying to achieve, you can use any size, unless you're trying to replicate a specific project you saw here. Swing by the store and study the sizes then pick which you feel works best for you.

if you have a question about a specific post ask at the bottom under THAT post. If you have a general question ask at the top right under Ask Question.
Hi,
Use a robe you are happy with, or if you saw this in a Project, look it up at top of Homepge.
A good cotton rope from Lowes or HD would work.
Hello! If it something that you saw in a Hometalk posted project, ask your question on that precise post.
This is a general Q&A posting area, the person who's project you're asking about would likely be unaware of your question about their project post. To get an answer about a specific post, ask the question directly below the project that will likely get you a reply from the Hometalk
If you ever want to go back to see a particular project, just click on the little blue house at the top of this page, left-hand corner. If you can't find a particular project, you can use the search bar. Also, please consider checking out "Explore Projects" for even more additional ideas.
Hope this helps.

Half inch thick Jute thread will also work for the Yarn ball.
It will depend on what ball light you are referring to. Are you talking about jute? It comes in several different thicknesses.
