From outdated to updated: Rattan Chair Makeover
I have been trying to decorate our home for a while now. I have realized that it takes time and, most of all, money. So whenever possible, I will purchase second hand furniture that will work in our home at thrift stores and Craigslist. I found a fabric for the space and I wanted to add to add a touch of modern to the space. I found the inspiration chair at Ikea.
I love the look of this chair and how it would work great with the fabric and the overall plan for the space. The only problem is that IKEA is 3 hours a way. With our weekends planned over the next several weeks, I didn't want to wait. I began looking for other alternatives on Craigslist. I was so happy when I found this little rattan chair for $25. I arranged to pick it up and began working on it that afternoon.
I sanded the chair with a fine grit sand paper to create a rough surface. I then primed the chair with Rustoleum Primer in Gray. I applied 2 coats to ensure entire coverage of the rattan surface. I have said before that I love, love, love Rustoleum products because of their excellent coverage and the quick dry times. After the primer had dried, I used Valspar Paint and Primer spray paint in a flat black. I applied 2 even coats on the chair and allowed the paint to dry.
I picked up the blue and white cushion from Pier 1 using a gift card that I received for my birthday so my cost was "FREE". I love the pattern of the cushion and how it looks against the black rattan chair.
By choosing to look for an alternative to the Ikea Inspiration chair, I saved $40 on the chair plus a 6 hour trip to and from Charlotte.
I hope that my rattan chair makeover inspires you. If you find a piece of furniture that is out of your budget or out of your area, look for alternatives to that piece at thrift stores, yard sales and Craigslist. With a little time and paint, you can achieve the same look for a whole lot less.
