Full tutorial and material list so you can make your own tufted headboard
This headboard was made over a couple of days and used materials easily found at a local fabric store, or even Target/Wal Mart. Though I made mine with leather, this can be done with any type of thick or upholstery fabric.
Materials include plywood, mattress foam and batting - see blog post for full list with tools.

Here is the whole bedroom, complete with finished headboard along with several other DIY projects (artwork, painted thrift store dressers and light fixture)
