Vinyl siding was first introduced in the late 1950's, but the popularity of vinyl siding has really grown since the 1970's when significant improvements were made to the product's quality and durability. Today vinyl siding is attractive, long-lasting, and essentially maintenance-free. For those reasons, vinyl siding is now the number one type of siding in America, outselling all other types of siding combined by approximately a two-to-one margin.
Many people think vinyl siding can't be painted; they think they are stuck with whatever color they have. But that is not true. Vinyl siding can be painted. Not only can vinyl siding be painted, but today you have a wider choice of colors for vinyl siding than ever before.
Vinyl siding is composed of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic. Traditionally vinyl siding was limited to light colors-white, off-whites, and light pastels--because dark colors absorb the heat from the sun, which can result in warping and buckling of the vinyl.
But today's color technology has evolved. Now there are darker paints that have been engineered so they don't absorb as much heat. Therefore, they are safe to use on vinyl siding. As a result, homeowners can now choose from a wide variety of colors suitable for vinyl siding. For example, Sherwin-Williams' VinylSafe line of paints offers a palette of more than 100 colors including many that are dark, or bright, or vivid. Custom color-matching is also available.
Now there is no limit when it comes to beautifying your vinyl-clad home.
