This is the bar that our friends found for us at a yard sale $50. Here is the before picture. It is a beautiful handmade wood bar.
For those that are new here, I’m planning a big 50th Birthday Party for my hubs in August. It’s going to be a Hawaiian Luau themed fun and casual backyard party. I shared some of my ideas and plans for his 50th Party here and an update with more fun stuff I found for it here if you want to see more.
Before we worked on it I suggested we add rolling wheels to the bar so we could move it easily and tuck it in the garage during winter months. Here is my hubs being a trooper and helping me add them. The tutorial for adding wheels will come later in the week.
So this bar was handmade and I wanted to take it make it into a Tiki look yet on a budget of course. I bought a pack of this Reed Fencing at Home Depot for $9.99. My plan was to install it across the front of the bar.
A funny story for you. Usually I don’t share the craft fails or craft frustrations with you but I will. I started this last weekend and dragged my hubs to Home Depot. This seemed to be perfect and said it is 96″ across on the package. Our bar is 94″. When I laid it out at first it measured 12″ too short. Uggghh, and it’s 90 degrees and hot and we put rollers on the bar too. So back to Home Depot (3rd time) we go to return this fencing and get another. They were super nice and had us open the package only to find this one also was short. So the Customer Service Gal had us take both packages for the price of one so we could get the extra length needed. That was so nice. So we get back and I cut it down and now I’m ready to staple. I Grab the staple gun and click click, it doesn’t work. So that Sunday ended in floating in the pool.
So yesterday I made another trip back and got a new staple gun and then it went pretty quickly. I just spread it across and stapled across the top, down the sides and across the bottom edge. Then I went through and stapled in some of the middle areas where the wire is.
Scott suggested putting it on the sides and since we had that extra I thought “Great Idea.” I’m so glad he did, because I love it on the sides too. As I have been working on areas of our big back yard I also spray painted two sets of patio chairs and hung a Rainboot Garden and you can see those posts here or come on over to the blog.
I found this great Tiki Head at a thrift store the other day for $4.95 and there are some posts on my plans for his party if you need some Hawaiian Luau ideas come on over.
I found this great sign the other day at Party City on clearance and am going to mount it and do something fun and creative with it so stay tuned. I've now made a fun sign with it and there is a post here on hometalk all about it so please check that out too. Ideas Ready .

Love this! I built myself a Tiki Bar too and used the reed fencing. It really adds atmosphere.
