At first glance, this looked like a piece of the past to take to the junk yard. However, the fact that this1948 Lane chest was once the "Hope Chest" of my late mother-in-law, caused us to see if some tender loving care would restore the beauty!!
Years stored away in the attic caused the laminate outer shell to crack and peel away.
It took my husband and I a couple of hours to slowly and carefully peel off the rotten laminate. Some of it was easily removed and other parts were literally glued on!
As you can see from this picture, the inside was in pristine condition! If only we could restore the outside then what precious heirloom we would have!!
I stained the wood underneath with a Minwax Golden Pecan stain.
Once the piece was stained, I finished off with Spar Urethane which protects the wood from water and heat!
We are tickled with the end result and we know that "Mom" who is in Heaven is smiling from above!! 😄❤️

Have a question about this project?
I have a cedar chest it's obvious from the inside and on the back of it. It's been painted, and I am NOT sure if it HAS VENEER where it's been painted. Cedar shows on the back and on the entire inside of it. Any thoughts on what to do with it. It absolutely needs redone, however I don't want to ruin it, it was my boyfriend's grandmother's.
Where can I find the hardware that holds the tray in? I have looked everywhere.
