DIY Wood Countertops
If you're looking to get a countertop to cover IKEA shelving units on a budget, this plan will give you a quick win without a lot of cost. I used this in my craft room/home office. Here's how I did it!
I found that I needed a 92” x 18” counter to cover the three shelving cubes I already had from IKEA. I brought these measurements to Home Depot and they cut it all for me. For thickness, I got two pieces the same size to screw together.
It was really cold out, so we set up in the entryway/front room of my house. We used two horses, some clamps, wood glue, a drill, and construction screws
We added some wood glue in between to make it really secure before screwing the two pieces together, but the 1.25" screws held really well regardless. We spaced them out evenly around the edges. Before screwing them together, make sure you turn the boards to bow inwards together to make it more flat.
I chose Jacobean stain to match the other wood in the room and sealed it with a polyurethane top coat in layers according to the directions on the can until it was a smooth finish (personal preference on how many coats, but at least 3). What do you think of the final product?

Countertop looks great. I have used hollow core doors for countertops and tabletops that other people discard. I have even used them to make furniture
