When we bought this house it had an existing Pergola that was in need of some TLC. We considered tearing it down but decided we'd work on bringing it back to life.
Fall was coming and this would be the perfect space for roasting hot dogs and making S'mores!

Here is how it looked when we started- pretty bland and unused.

We've done various things to this space such as adding 4x4's around the Pergola to contain some pea gravel and but I'll focus here on how we added onto it with some extra Pergola seating.

When a tree fell in a storm we ended up with some nice stool sized stumps and the table and stump stools addition to the Pergola idea was born!

Metal shelving brackets were attached to two sides of the Pergola to hold the table.

The table was 4 decking boards measuring 12 foot long. We chose decking boards because they're specially made for outdoor use and the edges are nicely rounded. These were clamped together to hold them in place and screwed together with angled cross supports.

With such a wide span and heavy boards we knew we'd need a center support as well. That came later....

The sod was removed where the tree stump seats were going.
We added landscaping fabric and 4x4 ground framing for the table and tree stump stools.
This is where the center supports were added. Kind of like legs for an indoor table in a way. Then the pea gravel was dropped into this section too.

Here you can see the completed Pergola table and stump stools addition. This project of table and stump stools only took a weekend. It cost about $75 just for this add-on table and stump stools project.
So far we've enclosed the bottom with 4x4's to contain pea gravel, power washed the Pergola, stained the wood brown, added a firepit, painted one of our Adirondack chairs an orangish color, built a new swing (seen here- http://www.hometalk.com/diy/build/furniture/t... ), and made this awesome table with stump stools.

We're so thrilled with it we posted it at Ryobi for their Fall contest https://www.ryobitools.com/nation/projects/fall-oasis-pergola-seating-for-cookouts-campfires_14155 and would love a thumbs up and/or a comment to let us know you were there- thanks! icon

Next weekend we will add lighting, paint the other Adirondack chair and make a 2nd swing,. THEN we will be done!

How much weight does the swing hold? Perhaps adding supports to that side of the pergola would be a good idea?
