Do you want to make a DIY air freshener that is healthy for your home? This air freshener recipe uses baking soda and essential oils. It’s amazing because baking soda is an excellent odor-neutralizer.

These DIY natural air freshener discs are chemical-free and effective at neutralizing odors throughout your home.

Tools and materials:

  • 2 cups of baking soda
  • ¾ cup of water
  • Thick baking paper cups or silicone molds
  • Ice cream scooper
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • Oven
  • Essential oils of your choice
  • Airtight container
Preparing the baking soda mixture

Step 1: Prepare the baking soda mixture

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C)
  • Measure 2 cups of baking soda using a measuring cup and pour it into a mixing bowl.
  • Measure 3/4 of a cup of water and gradually add it to the baking soda in the mixing bowl.

Stir

Stir the mixture thoroughly using a spoon or spatula. The goal is to create a paste-like consistency that's easy to work with.

Step 2: Scoop out and bake the discs

Line a baking tray with thick baking paper cups or use a silicone mold if you prefer specific shapes for your air freshener discs.

Take a small portion of the baking soda mixture in an ice cream scooper and place it into individual baking cups or molds.

Step 3: Remove from oven

Carefully put the tray in the preheated oven and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 20 minutes. Keep an eye on them to make sure they don't burn. After baking, remove the tray from the oven and allow the discs to cool completely. They should be firm and dry to the touch.

Adding essential oils

Step 4: Add essential oils

Now it's time to add a pleasant fragrance to your air freshener discs. Choose your favorite essential oils or a blend of oils that you enjoy. You can use scents like lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, or any other fragrance you prefer.

Place a few drops of the essential oil onto each disc. The baking soda will absorb the oil and release the scent slowly over time.

Sealing in an airtight container

Step 5: Seal the airtight container

Once cooled and with oil added, place the extra discs into an airtight container. This container will help preserve their effectiveness. Let the discs sit in the airtight container for a few hours to further absorb the essential oil fragrance.

How to use the DIY air freshener

To use the air freshener discs, simply place them around your home in areas where you'd like to neutralize odors. They can be placed in bathrooms, closets, near trash cans, or any other space that needs freshening.

Each disc can last approximately three months. If you notice the scent fading, you can add a few more drops of essential oil to refresh them. Let me know in the comments if you have other ways to make DIY air freshener recipes!

You can mix the scented oils in the baking soda and place in a jar with holes in lid. No baking needed. I do this in my car and bathroom. Vinegar also is an odor neutralizer . Just pour in a small glass or vase
