How to remove olive oil stain?

by Danielle Segev

I accidentally spilled olive oil on my couch, and now I'm desperate to remove the stain.

Have any of you successfully managed to remove grease stains from furniture? I would greatly appreciate any advice or techniques you can share.

What products or DIY remedies have worked for you in similar situations?

Looking forward to your practical suggestions!

Thanks

  • Scrub with a small amount of dishwashing soap. Rinse well. If that doesn't work, try laundry pre-wash.

Put baby powder or baking soda on the stain, let sit for 24 hours. Brush it off, if stain is still there use Dawn Dish Detergent and lightly scrub and rinse with warm water. Let fabric air dry.

Baking soda should absorb most of the olive oil. A 50/50 mix of vinegar and warm water with few squirts of Dawn dish detergent. Agitate to foam it up. Use a clean cloth and blot. If you have a wet/dry vac you can use it to vacuum the residue.

Baking soda or cornstarch will absorb the oil. Sprinkle on and let is set overnight.

Next day take vinegar and water (warm) and a few drops of Blue Dawn dish soap and work it in by blotting. Then a warm water rinse.

Step 1: Scrub the fabric with a tiny amount of hand dishwashing soap. Step 2: Thoroughly rinse the soiled area, removing the olive oil as well as the dishwashing liquid solution. Step 3: Use a laundry prewash stain remover to cure the stain.

  • It really depends on your fabric. I would start by checking the fabric cleaning code for your sofa. Most pieces of furniture have a code listed somewhere, because some will say absolutely no water, it can stain it worse. In general though, I would start with the baking soda. Let it sit and then vacuum it off. If that doesn't work, I'd try to treat the spots with Blue Dawn Dishwashing detergent, but don't scrub or your can damage the fabric.

Rub the area with dishwashing soap, then rinse and repeat if needed. Just be aware if all the olive oil isn't removed you could the stain so make sure it is gone before putting into the dryer.

Tru Oxiclean and a stiff brush but be very careful not to wear a hole in it. I used an old tooth brush

Try warming it up with a hair dryer? and then blotting it up on kitchen roll.

  • Do you know what the fabric composition is or what brand the couch is? Iā€™d start by contacting the company if you can otherwise Iā€™d look up cleaning methods based on the fabric type.

  • Use a small amount of hand dishwashing soap to scrub the fabric. Step 2: Completely rinse the stained area to get rid of both the dishwashing liquid solution and the olive oil. Step 3: To remove the stain, use a laundry prewash stain remover.
