Dawn is said to have ammonia?
There’s this social media warning about Dawn having ammonia in it and when you add it to bleach water, then it makes toxic gas.
I figured it was another unfounded meme, so I went to P&G’s website:
I’ve read the attached ingredients list and please tell me which one is supposed to be ammonia?

Wow sure enough it says do not add bleach. I wonder if that is correct about the ammonia, it would make sense given the warning.

Here’s where I start feeling in over my head on the subject of chemicals and most of the online information is very technical. The short answer is that amines are derivatives of ammonia where one or more hydrogen atoms have been replaced with a substitute. So the best I can discern with my layman’s understanding is that this ammonia derivative is in fact the likely reason for dish soaps to give a warning about not adding bleach.
It does not contain ammonia.
It doesn't contain ammonia, but it does contain Triclosan which is an endocrine disruptor. (most antibacterial products contain this, too) Being an endocrine disruptor means that it can have an effect on every system in your body. Don't think you'll get much washing dishes? Well, once it gets into the water table, it's in everything. Eventually, you'll eat and drink it. Kinda like Teflon, it's now in the environment... to stay. All we can hope for is limiting our exposure.
It does not have ammonia but blue Dawn and some other dish liquids do have Amines which are a product of ammonia. Best to read the label.
No Ammonia, they would have to specify on the bottle.

I agree there is no ammonia listed. I often pre treat stains with Dawn and there has never been a problem. If a product has either ingredient in it, it will have it listed, and products with either will have a warning about mixing them. Good luck and stay safe!
Each molecule of ammonia is made up of 1 atom of nitrogen, and 3 atoms hydrogen.
Dawn soap, as with many other detergents, contains alkyldimethylamine oxide. It is a surfactant, which helps the soaps to dissolve. Molecules of this chemical contain atoms of both nitrogen and oxygen, although not in the same ratio as pure ammonia.
