How do I soften a Muslin Cotton blanket?

I bought an expensive muslin cotton blanket that I was told will “get softer over time” but how do I speed up the process? It is already preshrunk so washing in warm water/placing it in the dryer isn’t an issue if that’s what I have to do. I just would like to soften it up as much as possible without having to wait “over time”. Thanks!

Hi Tanya, I'm not a huge fan of fabric softener but I know a lot of people swear that it works well in these instances. Soak the blanket in fabric softener over night and then wash it like normal. Here's some more info on fabric softener alternatives. https://earthfriendlytips.com/how-to-soften-clothes-without-dryer-sheets/
Just wash and dry it a couple times. Use fabric softener
Before you do anything else, I would recommend washing it with just vinegar in the water.
OR
Soak it in the hair conditioner first. Then wash on “rinse” only. Soak for a good hour.
You can also add some vinegar to the wash cycle
you are not supposed to use fabric softener on muslin cotton - I would wash on warm water a couple of times and dry and give it time to soften up or else return it and buy a 100% cotton blanket then you don't have to wait for it to get soft
Thank you for all the replies! The blanket washing instructions state do NOT use fabric softener. So I don’t think I’ll do that. Will the vinegar still be safe? Thank you for all of the replies!
I would put in the dryer, dampened, with the large wool dryer balls. You could add some of the plastic ones as well.
Actually both. Wash and rinse.
Wash as instructed on the care directions it to get the sizing out of the muslin, rinse with vinegar in the final rinse, that will remove any residuals. For the drying process, dry as instructed, I also would add the wool dryer balls to aerate the fabric as it dries.
I would not use vinegar or dryer sheets or fabric softener. I would wet the blanket and toss it into the dryer on the lowest heat with several untreated, unscented dryer balls and let it all tumble around for a while.
Fabric softener
Hello. You might want to try to call the manufacture for their specific recommendations. Perhaps they might recommend a particular detergent or fabric softener that might assist in the softening.
Soften and reduce static cling with these gentle, fabric-friendly options:
Vinegar Rinse
Add ½ cup distilled white vinegar into your washer’s softener dispenser (or use a Downy ball). The smell will disappear in the dryer.
Wool Dryer Balls
You can find wool dryer balls on Amazon for about the same price as a couple of bottles of fabric softener except these will last A LOT longer. Toss 5-6 into the dryer to soften a load of clothes. They’ll also help larger loads dry more quickly and evenly.
Foil Dryer Ball
Grab the Aluminum foil from the cabinet, pull a 12”-18” sheet and crush it into a ball. Toss one into the dryer to reduce static. The ball will shrink and tighten as it’s used. Replace once the edges begin to crack or pull apart.
All depends on the quality. High quality softens easier...
Try washer with extra fabric softener
I would wash and dry it and add vinegar while you are washing it.
I would just wash it in the washing machine
Vinegar will help soften the fibers faster.
Hi Tanya, Fill a washing machine with warm water, then add about 1/2 cup of the fabric softener. Allow the fabric to soak overnight, then rinse and tumble dry
Hey! Any update?
I see it's been a while, but I wanted to chime in. Congrats on your new muslin cotton blanket! It's always a bummer when you have to wait for things to soften up, but luckily there are some ways to speed up the process. I recommend adding a fabric softener to the wash - this helps break down the fibers and make the blanket softer.
Another option is to try soaking the blanket in warm water and fabric softener for a few hours before washing. Also, check out this site ( https://happyvibesmall.com/) to get a softer blanket if you will need a new one. I hope it helps!
White vinegar is a super-star multi-use cleaning ingredient that can help clean and soften your laundry. White vinegar has a low pH, making it an effective cleaner that can banish the residue and build-up that make fabrics stiff and matted (plus it gets rid of unwelcome odors, too).
Adding white vinegar to your detergent can boost its cleaning and whitening powers. But where white vinegar really shines in the laundry room when you use it as a replacement for fabric softener, resulting in super soft and silky fabrics.
Wash it a few times and add vinegar to the washer.
