Rustic Patriotic Decor DIY

If you know anything about me, it’s that I love Christmas! However, did you know that Independence Day is a close 2nd? There is just something about being patriotic and the fireworks are my favorite. The symbolic meaning of “bombs bursting in air” and our National Anthem make me cry every time.

I never really incorporated patriotic decor until recently. I’m not really sure why. But I have a new found love for all things stars and stripes. I like the bright traditional colors, but it doesn’t blend with my primitive home decor as much as this rustic version. Which do you prefer?

This easy DIY project was inspired from my good friend Kaycee over at Roost and Restore. I added my own twist and couldn’t be more pleased with this rustic patriotic decor.

SUPPLIES

  • Crafters Square wood planks measure approx 7.1″ x 2.8″ (these came in a 6 pack from dollar tree)
  • Mixed patriotic fabric patterns of your choice
  • Hot glue gun
  • Jute twine
  • 3 rustic metal stars (click here for similar ones from my Amazon store)
  • Scissors

STEP BY STEP

  1. I started by placing one fabric pattern on to the wood plank and hot gluing it on the back to secure it in place. I tried an adhesive spray to help it stay in place while I glued the back, but that isn’t really necessary. I was careful to line up the plaid fabric and to pull it tight for a smooth look.
  • Then place the rustic metal stars on the front and hot glue down in place. I didn’t measure placement. I placed smaller amounts of glue just on the tips of the stars so it wouldn’t ooze out from under the star. I don’t like seeing hot glue on finished DIY decor.
  • I began to rip strips of the various patriotic fabric patterns into various lengths. I tried to keep each piece approx the same width. But again, make it your own! I used scissors to snip the end of the fabric to help get it started. I like that frayed look so I wanted them torn. You could easily just cut strips if you prefer.
  • After I had all of the strips torn, I began hot gluing them on the back of the board. Making sure that all fabric was faced the right direction. I also decided that I didn’t want them in a pattern, so I placed them randomly across the bottom with a little overlapping for a more fullness look.
  • Last finishing touch was to add the jute hanger.

  • I hope you enjoyed making this Rustic Patriotic DIY Decor with me! If you somehow missed the live tutorial, you can still view it below.
