DIY Mini Pine Cone Christmas Tree

Aren’t those little mini pine cones the cutest?? I grabbed a bag of them at Hobby Lobby not sure what I was going to use them for, then it hit me to make a couple of pine cone Christmas trees to add to the Christmas village I was creating.

Supplies

  • MINI PINE CONES
  • FOAM CONE 2.75′ x 6″
  • MEDIUM-SIZED PINECONE FOR TOP
  • ROSE GOLD SPRAY PAINT (optional)

This is a really simple DIY project! As much as I love doing big complicated projects there is something very relaxing and zen about doing a repetitive project like this.

Starting at the top of the foam cone ( I’m using 2 cones that are the 2.75 inch x 6 inch size) I started hot gluing the mini pine cones around the perimeter of the cone. I left the flat top empty for now.

I tried not to leave any space in between each cone. Also, I glued the pinecones down at different angles. Some I even did on their sides. It gave the trees more detail and interest.

What I found worked best was once I had the first few rows glued on I tipped the foam cone upside down and glue the mini pinecones on that way. This stopped the pinecones from sliding as the glue dried.

Just hold the cone in place to let the glue set up if it wants to move. Some of the pinecones stayed put right away…others wanted to travel!!

It didn’t take too long to finish one of the trees!

To finish up my mini pinecone tree I glued a medium-sized pine cone right on the flat top. I actually pulled the cone off of a 50¢ pick I got at Hobby Lobby.

Now, the trees look great natural but I want to use mine in a Christmas village that I am putting together so I did a super light coat of rose gold spray paint on them. So light that I let some of the natural pinecone peek through.

If you do leave yours the natural color and you have any of the green foam from the cone showing all you have to do is take a tiny paintbrush with a little dark brown paint and touch it up.

After the paint dried it was time to add them to my Christmas village. You can check out Make Your Own Christmas Village to see the other pieces I DIY'd.

I really enjoy DIYing new Christmas projects every year…it gets me in the holiday spirit for sure!! You can stop by my website for more Christmas Decorating Ideas to get ready for the holiday season!

Happy Holidays!
