How to do snow or sand for glass ornament crafts?
I love the idea of using the clear glass ornaments with open sides to make your own Christmas scenes in. But what can be used to do a "floor" of sand or snow? Has anyone done this that could advise me?

You could use some spray adhesive and then add the snow and shake off the excess.
Salt looks like snow and will not attract bugs as sugar would.

You can use bits of quilt batting or poly pillow stuffing.

You can use epsom salts with a little glitter added for some sparkel!
As Ann indicated, you can use epsom salts and adhere to the open ornament with spray adhesive. For an added touch you can use essential oils to add some fragrance....perhaps pine.
Here's a couple of recipes:
Try any of these faux snow recipes:
Recipe 1: 4 parts Epsom salts to 1 part glitter or iridescent flake
Recipe 2: 4 parts Epsom salt to 1 part glitter or flake, with a dash of corn starch and a dash of quick farina (Cream of Wheat)
*Recipe #2 has a really powdery, fluffy texture, but don’t leave out the farina if you use the cornstarch because the cornstarch alone will cloud up the jar.
*Give recipe#2 an antique snow look by adding several more dashes of farina (like the Blizzard of 1918 jar)

You can use the cotton batting or fiberfill.
You could use clear nailpolish and add sand to it or white crystals for snow and let it dry.
I just bought a neat product called Aleen's Glitter Snow. It's a paint consistency, but it has a nozzle so you can squirt it into the ornament.
I saw some really charming very small animal figurines, both glass and resin, and wanted to use these glass ornament balls that have open "windows" on the side to do simple scenes. What I had in mind was a layer maybe 3/4" thick of snow or sand depending on the land or sea animal as a floor and then set the figurine on that. With perhaps other small items as well. But I enjoyed all of these ideas - even the ones that were more of a paint rather than a thick floor. Thanks so much to all of you!

You can a clear ornaments take top off and fill with sand
Salt or sugar. Shredded paper
Hi Lila, we make lots of fairy gardens and miniature scenes and use florist foam to create sandy mounds. Spray the foam with tacky glue and then dip them in fine beach sand or fake snow. Here's a tutorial where we made beach scenes inside an hourglass - https://acraftymix.com/blog/diy-sands-of-time-hourglass/
You know they make a sand called polymetric (not sure on the spelling) that is used by landscapers. The sand sort of hardens when it is watered. Would something like that work for you?
You can get the shredded plastic fake snow, it works well as I did that last year. Although, if the ornaments are open, you might carve little bits of foam, glue the snow or sand on (you can use regular sand), then glue the foam bit in there.
You can make use of salt, bits of quilt batting or poly pillow stuffing.
Hello Lila, you could use torn up cotton pads or cotton balls as snow, or even spray paint some dried moss white and use that as snow. You can also buy craft sand in different colors , mix it with glue to make it "non spilling"
