Thinking Outside the Box

Have a piece that doesn't match your color? Transform it with paint to go with your decor, such as this wooden Flag.

Who says you have to leave a picture or sign the color you got it in? I have had this flag for quite a while. I love the red, white & blue but it doesn't match my color aesthetic.

Let's change it!

I started by painting the whole thing Linen White in Chalk Paint by Rust-oleum.

I love chalk paint because you don't have to go the extra step in priming.

You should clean your project before you begin.

I began by taping off the stripes. I still wanted it to look like a flag but with my colors.

The original white stripes I painted with the Rust-oleum Linen White and then for the red stripes, I used Burnished Gray by Behr.

What do you think?

Would you do something like this?

I was loving this new color as is but I think it needed something more!

I wanted to distress it a little.

I started by sanding some of the paint off.

I wanted to have some of the red from the stripes to come through and the blue from where the star sits.

I just randomly put my sander down and didn’t overthink it.

I only wanted a few spots to come through to show it’s original color.

If you follow my blog, you know I love transfers.

They are like big stickers that you can place on furniture and projects like this.

I have several and from those I usually have little pieces laying around that I can use on small projects like this.

Take some black paint (or brown) and add a little bit to a cup and add some water to it. You want it runny enough to apply to your project like a stain.

Then just apply it with a paintbrush all over your project. I worked in sections and then wiped the (stain) off with a paper towel in the picture above.

Next, I splattered paint onto the flag with a toothbrush. I used the watered-down paint (stain) and blotted my paper towel over that. Splatter it again but with the black paint only, not watered down.

What do you think?

Would you do this to a flag?

This project was easy and budget friendly. I had all the items on hand from previous projects.
