Now is the perfect time to create your next October fairy godmother garden.

First, prepare a raised bed garden. This one is with concrete cinder blocks and soil.

This is the heavy-lifting part of the project. Make a rectangle frame of cinder blocks. Make sure they're stacked snuggly together.

Next, add the soil. You can see here that the soil is neatly encased in the frame.

Make sure there's a good amount of soil. You'll add some more later (about 3") to cover the pumpkin seeds.

Now for the fun! Carve a jack-o-lantern.

Scoop out the pumpkin seeds and pumpkin goop and pop it all in the raised bed.

Admire your pumpkin masterpiece. So silly!

Gently cover the pumpkin seeds and goop with organic soil.

Let the seeds and goop sleep soundly through the winter under 3″ of soil.

A sweet blanket of snow will keep the seeds moist. Sleep tight.

In the spring, add wildflower seeds to the bed for a summer explosion of flowers.

While quietly, below ground, the fairy godmother pumpkins are working their magic.

Suddenly, one day in late spring, enormous green leaves with glowing yellow flowers will pop up in the bed.

And before you can blink…Fairy Godmother pumpkins will begin to peek through the leaves! In your own raised garden bed!

Almost as if by magic!

Maybe it is magic!

Hi! Lovely bed of pumpkins and flowers! How did you water? I used a drip tape on mine and some of the pumpkins ended up on top of the tape and rotted (or I was overwatering).

Do you have any problem with critters eating the pumpkins or leaves as they grow?

Has anyone in the southern states tried this? I live in Georgia...mid north Georgia. We rarely have a very cold winter season that includes snow except for possibly January& February. Will the steps in the article also work here? I don't want pumpkins in January...

Do you have any idea how HUGE pumpkin vines get? I planted them one year, they covered a huge area and it's hard to keep them contained.

Hi Pat - Yes, pumpkin vines do grow fast and can cover a massive area...however, here in the Desert SW, anything green is worth keeping, and with not a lot of water, the pumpkins are usable manageable in a small space. The delight is to see the crazy growth of the vines and to then get pumpkins for Fall. Thanks for your comment. Jeanne - Doodle T and Me!

Inhaveva beautiful raised garden cinder blocks. However, i So tired of having to weed the cinderblocks that weeds grew straight up of an out. I turned my cinderblocks to the side. They work much better that way —-just my HUmble opimiom…

Hi Mary - after theses photos were taken, we placed toppers on top of the blocks to cover the holes...really does finish the look of the raised bed. Thanks! Jeanne - Doodle T and Me!
