Just curious with this being a very different stressful year due to COVID if any of you are decorating less for holidays especially Christmas than in past?

i did not decorate for Halloween

Did a little more fall decor to last through Thanksgiving

i love Christmas for what it represents but also the music and decor but dreading going out to storage shed and bringing Christmas stuff in

Has anyone ever skipped their regular decorating and just started fresh with all diy decor?

I love the colors, smells and sounds of Christmas decor but for a few yrs now we have not decorated at all - we had cats and they climbed our trees and since I have a lot of one of a kind, vintage and hand painted ornaments those were the ones they played with. I miss it but like you, I dread going into the attic bringing down boxes and then having to put them back and take them down again to repack everything. I am not a scrooge but I just enjoy the decor at my family's house (they are younger than me too lol)

Over the years we have decorated less and less, Covid has made no difference. Decorating became more and more of a chore and taking down and putting it away was something no one wanted to do. When it finally came down to just me doing it all, was when the holidays stopped being fun. I do love to see other's ideas and decorations and even cruise the neighborhoods to see what others have done. Oddly though, we have decorated this year for Halloween and hope to get trick or treaters

  • I have also done less decorating as I've gotten older. My kids are grown and it's a lot of work. Just because the media promotes lots of decorating doesn't mean we all have to do it. Do what makes you comfortable.

  • Well I have not done a darn thing. Did not and will not participate in trick or treating this year as I live in a hot spot and anyone willing to risk their children's lives for candy is not very smart in my book. Other safer areas, go for it. Only thing I decorate is the front porch as mine is small and I already have so much stuff, it goes quickly. Plus the neighbors always compliment me and some even take photos. As to the inside, nothing will be done. I arrived home on March 14th to find a water leak that started after February 11th when I went to stay with my ex spousal unit after foot surgery. Two days later they shut us down. I had to have the plumber in, then a very expensive haz mat team to remove the mold and monitor the air. Walls were ripped out and still not replaced. My belongings are everywhere as I have no place to put them until the interior is rebuilt. I am living in what looks like a hoarder / demolition home. It isn't fun.

There have been many years where I have skipped decorating due to one reason or another. In hospital, just returned from a surgery, a death in the family and so on.

Don't let the tv adverts or magazines make you feel inadequate for not decorating your home so that it looks like a Christmas store or hotel.

You do what suits you! If you have a mantel, dress it up with some battery lights, candles, etc. Add some garland for sparkle or subtle with a natural arrangement. Gives you the holiday feel without hours and hours of work.

I have slowed down on my decorating, in fact I have been giving stuff away. I used to collect Santa's and have so many beautiful ones. But I now do not like going through all of them to see what I want to put out. It is so much work to go up in the attic or closets and take all that stuff down. And only for me, I don't want to be a scrooge so I bought a very small 2 foot tree and put lights on the fireplace and a few Santa's. Where as I used to decorate the bathrooms, the kitchen and the den. Now just one room.

I've totally cut back on decorating

Actually sold off lots of Halloween at a flea market. Probably will not do Christmas since cannot host an open house or have relatives over. Will curl up on sofa and watch a movie and save money.

Subce I have spent more time at home than usual, I have been going through the rooms and items I have stored. I am actually decorating more than usual since I have the time to drag out all the older items I used to love decorating with. I plan to do the same with both Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations. Whie un-decorating, I plan to pare down a bit and remove items I don't really care for any longer and donate them to the Salvation Army thrift sstore so someone else can enjoy them.

I find I'm shopping less and using what I have more and really enjoying my home more than ever.

  • I did that a few years ago, simplified and loved it. I made some new things and only put out the truly special ones. I spent less time on decorating, more time enjoying DIY and family.

Even though we won't be having parties this year, I am definitely going to go all out. I'm unpacking every single box of decorations, which I don't usually do.

Might even make a few more wreaths too. I need some Christmas spirit this year!

I don't celebrate XMAS since I am not Catholic.

Christmas will be the same as usual. Halloween we didn't do as much because it snowed. Thanksgiving will be the same as usual. Easter same as usual. No changes really.

Oh yes.. we did skip a couple years.. because it was all up to me to do it. So for Christmas I put up the tree. put lights on it. a little tinsel and big red bows. Fastest set up ever. LOL.. do what you feel is good for you. We never have company so it wont be any different for us.

Good question. Unique to individuals. I would say I am decorating a bit less due to less interaction with family and friends. But I do use frameless flicker candles and fairy lights now due to the short day and lack of natural lighting.

I think you should do whatever brings you happiness. If making new decor is the thing than go for it! In these strange times we need to chase what brings us joy. You might find just bringing out one of your decor boxes and starting there you might get that spark again.

if you’re looking for new Christmas decor crafts you can’t go wrong with this with supplies from the dollar store: https://www.frugalfamilytimes.com/2018/11/elegant-christmas-decor-crafts-from-the-dollar-store.html

Our neighborhood has gone wild for halloween decor! But in my opinion, Halloween is more fun than Christmas.

Christmas lifts my spirits, so I'm not going to change anything about this year. Otherwise, I'd get even more depressed. Just my opinion though.

  • Em Em on Oct 26, 2020

Decorate for yourself. It may lift your spirits.

All I did for Halloween was door wreaths and dining table. However, I am considering putting up my Christmas decorations up November 1st rather than waiting until black Friday (my normal). I don't dread putting decorations out nearly as much as I hate putting them back up. But it appears we will working from home for at least 6 months so I think I'll have plenty of time to put everything back away.

  • I personally don’t decorate for holidays but I think you should do what makes you happiest.
