I saw some cot mobiles on Pinterest while searching for nursery inspiration and decided to have a go at making my own! I had seen them on Etsy and although I love supporting small shops I figured I could make one on a budget instead.

I found all of the supplies on eBay and Amazon. First I laid out the arrangement of the felt balls and estimated how much cotton cord I would need. I then cut these to equal lengths, leaving one slightly longer to make the hanging loop.

I tied a knot at the end of each piece. Next I took a large blunt needle and threaded the piece of cord onto it. I then strung all of the felt balls in order onto the cord and repeated for all five pieces.

Once I was finished I cut the excess string from knot at the end of each cord underneath the last ball.

Next I looped the cord around the bamboo hoop. I measured the diameter of this and then marked on five equal markings so that I would know where to place each string.

I measured equal lengths from the bottom ball to the top of the hoop where the loop was.

I then taped the strings into position on the marks.

This was to hold the strings in place while I tied them together at the top.

Once all the strings were in place I then made sure all the pieces were equal in length. I then tied a knot in the longest cord to form a loop. Finally, I tied a knot in all of the pieces of cord at the point of the knot from the loop, then cut off any excess string.

I put a hanging hook in the ceiling to hang it over the cot. Once hung I used a spirit level to make sure it was hanging level, adjusting the strings as needed, and then arranged the balls equally. I needed to do some final adjustments once it was hung since some of the stings and balls had moved from position. I possibly could have tied the cord in place which would have helped with this.

The finished mobile! I love it and it was fun to create something a bit different! It was so worth making myself as I was able to make it for half the price of those sold on Etsy.

Although this nursery space isn’t finished yet I love the detail that this adds to the look. I also plan to make a garland to hang over the sign once it’s finished and I’ll use the leftover materials for this. I’ll update here with a finished photo once this is done!
