If you don’t like how one of your books looks or you just want to protect it because it’s valuable to you, a fabric book cover is what you need.

A practical and fun project, this DIY fabric book cover is great for those relaxing afternoon sewing sessions. It’s easy to make and takes less than half an hour.

Want to learn how to make one? Here’s an explanation of how to do that.

Take measurements and cut the fabric

Measure the around the closed book with a measuring tape. Then measure the length of the book.

Add eight inches to the width and two inches to the length.

Cut out a rectangle in the dimensions you got.

Prepare the fabric for sewing

Turn the fabric wrong side up. Fold the short edges for a quarter-inch, press, and stitch them.

Turn the fabric right side up. Place the book on its center vertically, with the book’s spine on the fabric. Make sure that the book is about equally away from the top and bottom edge of the fabric.

Open up the book on a page that’s around halfway through the book. Fold each side of the fabric over the book covers and close the book like that.

Pin the fabric on the top and bottom.

Sew the fabric book cover

Open the book and mark about one-eighth of an inch away from the covers on the top and bottom.

Take the fabric cover off of the book. Sew along the markings you made.

Clip the corners and turn the cover right side out. Push out the corners and press the entire thing.

The fabric book cover is ready!
