In this short video we show how to use the silhouette Cameo vinyl cutting machine to create detailed stencils from any clip art. Then how to easily etch the design on glass.
The first step is to search for and save the clip art you want to use in your project. We just used google search and searched for Free clip art palm tree. For the best results use a crisp solid black art.
In this video we show the simple steps of importing the design into the Cameo software and then tracing it and cutting the vinyl stencil. After the design is cut use a razor knife or tweezers to weed out the design. Weeding is peeling off the part of the vinyl which you want to etch through.
Here is our stencil ready to be transferred onto glass for etching.
For simple designs you can just peel the vinyl from its backing and place it onto the glass. I always like to adhere a clear transfer film onto the vinyl then peel away the backing. The transfer film gives me the ability to be a little more precise in placing the stencil onto the glass.
Once the stencil is adhered to the glass, lift away the transfer film and its ready to etch.
We used Armor Etch glass etching cream. In the past I was able to get this from the local art and crafts store. For this project I searched Amazon and had it delivered to the house in a couple days. Just use a small brush and completely coat the exposed areas through the vinyl. Then leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. Final step is to rinse off the armor etch with plenty of running water and peel off the stencil
Finished product is a beautifully etched detailed design that was easy to craft.
Please check out the how to video which shows every step in the process. www.diyeasycrafts.com

How can this be done if you don't have a vinyl cutter??

  • Kathy Kathy on Jul 23, 2017

I've done this with stencils. They work well, but the Armor etching doesn't show up all that well. I've tried leaving it on longer but still doesn't show up the way I'd like it to. Any suggestions?
