Master this super easy technique and coat your world in concrete!
Our new shelf was destined to hold a tissue box in our completely redone first floor bathroom. But, as I'm picky as all get out, not just any ol' tissue box will do.
I wanted to try my hand at pouring a solid concrete cover but either it was too late in the day to start this project or my brain shut off. I knew there had to be an easier way.
Indeed, there is! It struck me one day in the shower, as ideas are wont to do for me, I know, it's weird. Use wood and cover the wood in concrete! So based on a tissue box, I cut quarter inch plywood into pieces, allowing for some extra wiggle room inside the box.
Next I laid out the top opening. Now, I could have gotten all creative or fancy pants here but alas, I did not.

Using a paddle bit, I drilled out the corners.
Then using a palm router freehand zipped out the rest, goofing up along the way of course. You can use a jigsaw, a scroll saw, a hand saw even if you'd like.
Next was assembly. All I did was glue the pieces together, no fasteners necessary.
Once everything was set, I gave the box a sanding, rounding the edges and corners a bit. The concrete itself is simply a skim coat.
Mix some up and smear it on the box using a putty knife. The directions say you have 24 hours to sand your new finish. Be sure to get things as smooth as you can right off to make your life easier down the line.
I painted the inside of the box black.
Once everything was set and after a wee struggle with sanding, I coated the box in paste wax for a nice finish.
And there we have it! A concrete tissue box cover the easy way!
