Five Dollar Sign Makeover

Hey, everybody! Just stopping in today to share an adorable sign makeover with y’all! I saw this super cute sign at Dollar General for only 5 DOLLARS. I knew I had to have it! But …I also knew I’d need to “Brooke it up” a little!

SUPPLIES NEEDED: *referral link*

This $5 sign from Dollar General

Apple Barrel paint in the shade Pavement

thin paint brush

*Assorted Paint Markers (these are the ones I have!)

The sign is pretty cute as is (especially if you love FARMHOUSE)…and if you love it like that, you can’t go wrong! Five bucks from the store to your door and you’re done! BUT…I wanted to give it a springtime facelift! Who doesn’t need a springtime facelift… am I right?? LOL!

I love the galvanized metal they used, but I don’t usually love it so bright and shiny. I prefer it to look a little aged or distressed most of the time, so this time I simply painted over it with Apple Barrel Pavement. It’s a very dark

gray that almost translates black. I love it! I didn’t try to cover the metal completely because I like that “perfectly imperfect” look! Besides…I knew I’d be adding more to that metal once my paint dried.

The word HOME is dimensional, so I used my bright pink marker to trace around the edges. Since the letters have a little height, I had no trouble keeping that pink paint from getting on the background. I love how that little outline really makes

the letters pop!

Did you happen to catch the live I did recently where I just doodled a little nature scene on the back of a sign I had changed my mind about? It turned out so super cute, and I was only doodling! YOU CAN SEE THAT PROJECT HERE! I thought I’d use that same technique to make some updates to this sign too!

I just went for it! I did something a little different on each letter. I made squiggly lines and bold stripes, flowers and leaves… and of course polka dots! I also freehanded a whimsical flower just next to the H, and I was so proud of how it turned out! The whimsical style of drawing or painting is SO forgiving! You don’t have to worry about being perfect!

Once those letters were done, I thought I needed to make the smaller words a little bolder, so I just went right over top of them with my black paint marker. And just to add a little more whimsy to this piece, I added a turquoise stripe to the top

of the galvanized metal, and you guessed it… hot pink polka dots too!

I just LOVE the transformation of this little sign! It was perfectly adorable before, but now it has me ready for a little springtime and sunshine!

Most of all, I love the quote “Memories are made in this home,” because that’s exactly what I want for my family every single day! Whether it’s game night or movie night or snow days or just laid-back quiet time, I hope they always remember this isn’t just home, it’s home base… a place where we all belong and we are all loved.
