Earlier this summer I made a few updates to the nursery in preparation for baby Fletcher’s arrival. Even though we moved out of our first home shortly after John Davis was born, I was able to keep the nursery essentially the same when we moved into our new house. Perks of having two boys in a row! ; )

However, I did make a few small changes to the nursery decor in order to customize it for Fletcher. One of those changes was updating the large monogrammed canvas that hangs over the dresser.

DIY Monogrammed Canvas

This monogrammed canvas is one of the things I get asked about the most so I thought I’d share just how simple it is to create! Not only does it make a perfect statement piece, but it is so easy to replicate and gives you a ton of bang for your buck.

Here you can see photos of the monogrammed canvas in the original nursery and also in Fletcher’s updated nursery in our new home.

What You Will Need:

  • Wood monogram. You can choose any size or style to customize it for your space!
  • Large canvas
  • Craft paint in the color of your choosing
  • Foam paintbrushes
  • Matte Finish protective spray
  • Glue

To Create Your Own DIY Monogrammed Canvas:

I ordered the 22 inch unpainted circle cut monogram from scrappinplus on Etsy. Once it arrived I lightly sanded it with medium grit sandpaper to give it a smooth finish.

After sanding I used a foam paintbrush to paint two coats of craft paint in a soft baby blue color.

I used Folk Art craft paint in the color “Light Blue.”

After the paint dried completely I brought the monogram outside and sprayed it with a few coats of protective finish.

I used this Krylon protective matte finish spray. It dries almost immediately and you can’t even tell it’s there!

I bought this canvas from Michaels (when it was 50% off!) and painted it with two coats of white craft paint. My husband asked me why I was painting white paint on a white canvas 🙂 You can really skip this step if you want, but I wanted a “softer” white for the nursery instead of the original stark white color of the canvas.

I used Folk Art craft paint in the color “Wicker White.”

Lastly, I used E6000 glue to attach the monogram to the canvas. I put a few dabs around the edges and centered the monogram in the middle of the canvas.

I let it dry for a good 24 hours before I hung it up on the wall.

And there you have it – a large, adorable statement piece for under $40!

I love the fact that I can eventually repaint the monogram a different color so it can transition with the boys as they get older.

… But hopefully that won’t happen too soon! : )

Stayed tuned as I’m excited to share a few more easy + inexpensive updates I made to this sweet room!
