Learn how to make mudcloth art prints for your home with this easy art tutorial. You have likely seen pillows, wallhangings, or other textiles either made with authentic mudcloth, or inspired by mudcloth. Mudcloth textiles are often found in bohemian, contemporary and minimalist decors. With our easy DIY, you can create mudcloth inspired prints at a fraction of the cost. Read on to learn how we created this graphic DIY art.
First the supplies you will need:

  • canvas sheet from a primed canvas artists pad
  • a black acrylic paint marker
  • a pencil
  • tracing paper
  • scrap paper
  • picture frame of your choice

For the first step, you want to research mudcloth patterns and sketch out your favourites on scrap paper. You can google mudcloth and look at photos for inspiration, or alternatively you can visit our site and use our patterns.

Mudcloth is very simple to recreate as it consists of simple graphic dots and lines.

Once you have decided on a pattern, then draw out your pattern on tracing paper, pressing very firmly to deposit pencil marks onto your paper.

You can do this free hand. Or you can use a ruler to create perfectly straight lines. You can also use a ruler to carefully measure out each section.

However, since mudcloth is handmade, perfection isn't the goal. Also, if your pattern is repeating, you will only need to do a single section of your pattern.

Once you have your pattern down on the tracing paper, use the tracing paper to transfer the pattern to a primed canvas sheet which you will find in a canvas artists pad. You do this by carefully placing the tracing paper with the pencil marks face down on your canvas and then going over the pattern again.

This will deposit the pencil marks onto the canvas so that you can use this pattern as your guide.

Press firmly so that the pencil marks can be easily seen but not too firmly as to tear your tracing paper.

Then, lift your tracing paper, and do the same for each section of your canvas sheet. Using tracing paper ensures each repeating section is the same.

Use a white eraser to correct any pencil smudges.
Then using a black acrylic paint marker go over each section of your pattern.

Allow the paint to cure for a few days before framing your art. You can also use an artists clear medium to protect your print.

Note: you can also do this art on thick card stock but the thick canvas sheets are more reminiscent of mudcloth.

We framed our art prints in gold frames but black frames would be bold and graphic.

This mudcloth pattern is very simple.

This mudcloth pattern is slightly more difficult. Both add a little bohemian or minimalist flair to your home decor.
