How To Make a Chalkboard Sign Using an Old Window

I recently bought some old windows from a friend. They were white, chippy, old, and soooo good. I was trying to figure out what to do with them - when I thought they would make the perfect framed chalkboard sign! These are my very favorite signs I've ever made, they are big, unique and one of a kind! Here's how I made them.

The glass was already out of these, but remove it if it's still there.

Using a Dremel Multi Max, I cut through the stile on one side. I was then able to wiggle the stile the rest of the way out.

I didn't do a lead test on these, but they are old and chippy and could likely have lead on them somewhere.

So we sealed the window with one generous coat of General Finishes Flat out Flat. It dries very flat, and you don't even know it's there - but it seals all the old paint, and ensures it won't be doing any more chipping.

Next, I cut to size some chalkboard material I found to size and stapled it right to the back of the frame. Check out my blog for more details about the exact product I used for this and where to find it!

To create the sign I'm using Chalk Couture. The Farm to Table transfer is gorgeous, and huge and I love it! It's BIG, so two sets of hands are helpful!

After I fuzzed it, we laid it out on the chalkboard and once we were happy with where it was we smoothed it all out. This Bondo spreader tool was very helpful to smooth it out and stick it down good!

I used Couture Ink for this to make it permanent. I didn't want this to be able to be washed off. I added blobs all over the sign, then smoothed it out and wiped back the excess with the squeegee.

Pull the transfer off and you will have the most gorgeous sign! I just can't get over this one. It's the perfect piece for a dining room! It's big, so it really makes a statement.

That's how easy it is to make a chalkboard sign using an old window!
