Make Your Own Rust

I did a post on the spool clock but wanted to add one specifically about making something rusty. I used a mason jar lid in the center of the clock simply because it fit. I wanted it and the hands to be rusty to match the rusty roman numerals. I tried everything to make them rust..bleach, vinegar, steel wool and nothing! I was baffled..those lids always seem to rust when I DON'T want them too.. My daughter said "Why don't you just paint them rusty?"..as if there is a realistic rusty looking spray paint..well there kinda is
what I started with
I took turns doing thin layer of each color until I got the look I wanted, starting with the satin cinnamon
the smaller circles were naturally rusted so I though the center and hands looked close in comparison
Super easy
this was my practice lid.. I liked that one too :)

Where did you purchase the clock works? I've been looking and neither Michaels or Hobby Lobby around here have anything that large? AND by the way I love yours! Great job!
