How can I cover ugly kitchen floors in a rental?

The floor space I want to cover in some way is about 12 feet by 14 feet. I need to take the measurements but that is my guess. I am renting so can’t make major changes or compromise the floor underneath. Thanks for your suggestions and advice!

I would go with rugs that will cover the majority of the kitchen floor so you don't see the flooring that is bad.
You should be able to purchase a piece of vinyl flooring to go over top for now and when you leave take it with you if you still can use it. Be sure to get the exact measurements before heading to the store for your purchase. You can fasten the flooring down on the sides with a small trim and air nail it so it does not move.

Yes, rugs in kitchens must be Nylon, as Olefin & Polypropylene will spot irreparably with cooking splatters.
Those two carpet fibers are oiliophillic (love oil) and will wick the splatters out in big oil stain circles.
You can buy vinyl sheet flooring very inexpensively. You could lay it down like a rug in at least part of the area.
If those are your measurements, you can purchase a piece of sheet vinyl that is 14' long. Standard width is 12'. Lay it down and tack quarter round or shoe molding at the baseboards. My husband used to work for a rental housing company and that is how they did it when a floor needed changing.
There are removable floor decals that look like tile. Otherwise, I suggest a large, inexpensive rug.
