Hi Junivive, do your sunflowers get enough sun? That's one of the biggest reasons why the buds won't open. You can read more about it here - https://www.gardenguides.com/107324-reasons-sunflower-plant-not-flower.html
It sounds like they are not getting enough light. They need to be in direct sun for most of the day.

Hi Junivive, When you find your sunflower plants with no flowers, first take a close look at where, when and how you planted them. Improper growing conditions and culture definitely can result in no blooms on sunflowers. Let there be light! Too little sunlight can retard flower formation, which means no blooms on sunflower plants.

Too little sunlight can retard flower formation, which means no blooms on sunflower plants. In terms of cultural care, sunflowers are not terribly demanding. They do need well-draining soil, however, and moist, fertile soil also helps. Nutrient-poor, sandy soil isn't likely to produce generous blossoms.

Hi! I grow sunflowers on a sunny windowsill in my kitchen on the south side of my house. I rotate the container and transplant some of the growth to other containers since they grow lots of roots. This year I grew one in a big glass jar and was fascinated by the many roots! So don't overcrowd them, keep them watered and in lots of sun.
I would try to give it more direct sunlight and the water it needs. Maybe a little fertilizer. This may help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enNGdtnD7kc
