Growing your own food lets you know what's on it, in it and where it comes from. I love growing my own food! Growing garlic is not hard at all!

Your seed garlic is the most important part. You don't want to buy garlic from the grocery store for seed because it may be treated with growth retardant to prevent it from sprouting. Invest in some good quality organic seed garlic and you'll never have to buy garlic again. Click here to see where to buy it.

Break the heads of garlic into cloves and prepare your planting beds. You need fairly loose soil with good quality amendments such as compost.

Plant garlic about 4 inches deep about 4 inches apart. When garlic is ready, gently loosen soil around bulbs and pull lightly on tops grabbing the top near the soil so it won't break off. You'll know the garlic is ready to harvest when at least three of the outer leaves have turned brown. Don't wait too long after to harvest them or they may dry part of the bulb as well.

Allow your garlic to dry and store in a cool dark place. Soft neck garlic varieties will store for nearly a year. Save some of your cloves to plant next year! For more information, click on the blog post.
