Houseplants: A Room-By-Room Guide
Decorating with plants can help open up your apartment or small space. Here’s how to place them for maximum growth around your home.
Want to brighten up your apartment quickly? Use plants as part of your decorating scheme.
The kitchen is, not surprisingly, a great place to grow food-related plants.
Herbs like chives, rosemary, cilantro, parsley, sage, basil, thyme, tarragon and others do well in sunny kitchen windows. You can try your hand at some fruits and vegetables in your kitchen as well using scraps and seeds — goodies such as pineapple, onions, peppers and tomatoes can all flourish indoors.
Plants are a natural for your bathroom. Not only do they add a tranquil, spa-like atmosphere, the humidity of the bath is a boon for many plants. Since most bathrooms do not have direct sunlight, opt for plants without high light requirements.
Avoid succulents, which do not care for a moist environment, and try beautiful, lush varieties, such as orchids, philodendrons, bamboo and peace lilies. If you have no floor space to spare, hang them for a dramatic look.
If you have a typical living or family room that collects lots of sunlight, have fun with a variety of plants, including aloes, succulents and cacti. The lack of humidity in the living room, plus the natural light, will help these plants along.
Try putting them in creative containers, such as pitchers, boxes or cups. Have fun with their arrange-friendly nature on end tables, coffee tables, ledges and even just placed on the floor.
