Yes. It is too early to buy them. You have to wait until around the middle of May before you plant them outside. Stay home and stay safe.
Madeline: here's some Long Island advice:

You can buy them now and have them in the house. Have you got a really sunny window you can set them in front of?
Transplant them later into larger pots or plant in the garden, like this

I start mine in the house and transplant them twice, so they get a really thick stem, I find that helps later on in the season
You can buy them, but keep them indoors for now. It's definitely too cold for them outside.
You can buy them and just keep them inside when you are going to have a frost.
Hi Madeline, this is Peggy. We have grown tomato plants for years and I think you may want to wait on buying the plants. Tomato plants need sunlight and they love it. If you keep them in the garage I don' believe they will get enough sun. And besides let the stores care for them a little longer. When is your last frost? Our last frost in Indiana is around First or May, that is when we plant. Just something to think about. Take care and stay well.
the garage will be fine. Just wait until April/May to plant
Hi Madeline - Not to answer the garage question but for after... This is the ultimate and super easy step-by-step guide to determine your plant hardiness zone, your frost dates, and also when to start planting indoors and outdoors. Plus lots of great resources. Hope this helps and happy gardening! Hugs, Holly

Just make sure they get plenty of light in the garage or they will get leggy. Put by the window or get a grow light.
I would definitely give those plants a light source and continue to warn them, but if there is a freeze warning at night, be sure to cover them.
I usually wait until around mothers day before putting any plants outside.
I know in New Jersey, Mother’s Day is considered to be the date to start planting in general.
You should be ok just watch for freeze if it gets to cold for a freeze then bring in over night or cover in the garage
Hi Madeline,
Ask the store if it is ok to plant on in your area. If you put in garage , they will need light. Better to put on window cill.
They'll be ok, but if there is a freeze you'll need to cover them.
