Do an internet search for certified home inspectors in your area. You want to know how old the roof is & it's condition, is the foundation stable?, does all the plumbing work, does the furnace/hot water heater work - how old are they? is the basement dry? and so much more. Those are just a few things off the top of my head.
Suzanne.....I agree that a realtor should know all the questions. You want to know that the house is ready to purchase and that you will have no major problems when you move in. Check for termites, water leaks in kitchen, bathes and under house, loose boards and railings on porches and steps. Most home inspectors know what needs to be checked but inspections are very important to a buyer...it opens up all sorts of possibilities of problems that might occur or relieves your mind of issues you are unaware may be unseen. Good luck!
