How to Give Your Kitchen Cabinets an Antique Look

5 Materials
If you’re considering refurbishing your kitchen cabinets and you would like to give them a rustic, antique look, watch this video to find out which products are best and how to apply them!
This tutorial is applicable to any high-traffic project you might be working on, be it kitchen cabinets, table tops, for example.

There are two products in the Country Chic Paint line that are designed to give your piece an antique look: glaze and antiquing wax. Both have similar effects, but each have unique looks and application methods. For certain projects, one may be a better choice than the other.

We always recommend sealing high-traffic furniture pieces with Tough Coat for optimal durability. Since Tough Coat is water-based and oil and water don’t mix, it cannot be applied on top of any oily products like wax. If you plan on sealing your piece with Tough Coat, glaze is the product you should use to add age and depth to the finish. That’s why in this tutorial, Rosanne will be showing you how to glaze your kitchen cabinets!
Step 1) Paint your cabinets
Apply any color of Country Chic Paint to your piece and distress as desired. For more details on how to prepare and paint your cabinets, see our kitchen cabinet painting tutorial. Make sure you wait 24 hours before moving on to the next step.
Step 2) Shake and stir your glaze
Before opening the jar, give it a good shake. Once you’ve opened the jar, use a stir stick to stir it for about a minute. You want to make sure the ingredients are very well combined!
Step 3) Apply the glaze
Step 3) Apply the glaze
Use a synthetic-bristle paint brush to apply the glaze, then remove the excess with a slightly damp, lint-free rag. Keep in mind that the glaze dries quite quickly so you should work in small areas to avoid streaking. Don’t try to tackle more than one cabinet door at a time. For more detailed instructions on how to glaze your furniture, see our glazing tutorial.
Step 4) Seal with Tough Coat
For high-traffic projects like kitchen cabinets, we recommend sealing your work with our Tough Coat for optimal protection against daily wear and tear. For more instructions on how to apply Tough coat, see our Tough Coat application tutorial.
