Vintage Buffet Redesign With Country Chic Wax and Iflex Wood Mouldings
This beautiful vintage buffet had an orange undertone but the wood is gorgeous so I didn't want to fully cover it, just tone it down a bit.
I softened the tones on this piece while accentuating the gorgeous wood grain by using Country Chic White Wax to enhance the natural beauty of this piece.
Before pic of the beautiful buffet, as you can see all it has gorgeous wood grain, too pretty to cover up with a coat of paint. When I get a piece that has natural wood grain, I do my best to accentuate it instead of fully covering it.
To prep this piece I cleaned it with GreenEz strip and clean then lightly sanded with a 220 grit, rinsing off any dust or residue with clear water.
The veneer on the side had one small area that had come loose, this is such an easy repair to do, see photo below for steps.
I love tightbond quick and thick for repairs and adding appliques, the glue sets up quickly and has amazing adherence.
I used a small paintbrush to apply the glue behind the veneer, this spot wasn't conducive for clamping so I used painter's tape and a damp painter's brush to remove the excess glue that seeped out.
I love love love the Iflex wood appliques, they are bendable, sustainable and so versatile they give any piece a touch of flare. I apply the appliques using tightbond quick and thick as well.
Using tightbond quick and thick I apply the Iflex appliques, even if the surface I'm applying the applique to is flat I still heat it up a bit to make sure it shapes perfectly to the piece.
The bottom of the piece had pieces missing and other pieces that were falling off so I chose to remove the pieces and replace them with Iflex.
For Iflex that has a lot of detail I make sure that I am generous with the tightbond to make sure that the entire piece secures to the surface, I also heat up the piece during application to make sure it molds perfectly to the surface.
This area allowed me to clamp the applique down, when you clamp it down and get a secure tight bond, some of the glue will seep out, I used a small damp paintbrush to remove the excess glue.
After all of the Iflex appliques were adhered I used Country Chic White wax over the entire piece.
When I'm using wax on a piece and I want to get it to go into the grain I apply against the grain instead of with it, by doing this it allows the wax to get into all of the areas of the grain and highlight them.
I'm loving the tones and ornate details on this piece, this was a quick redesign that looks like it took a week worth of work when in reality this was just a few short hours to do. These are my favorite redesigns, you get to see instant results!
