Watch as Apt2B resident designer, Kyle Schuneman, takes our Murtaugh Extendable Dining Table and uses chalkboard paint to give it a fun, versatile new finish in this DIY been to one of those fun Italian restaurants where they give you crayons so that you can draw all over the butcher paper that they use as a table cloth? If not then you’re really missing out. Drawing on the butcher paper is the perfect way to keep yourself entertained while you wait for your food (I guess you could talk to your family or friends but where’s the fun in that?). Now you can apply this fun idea to your own dining room table! All it takes is some chalkboard paint to transform your dining room table into a chalkboard that’s great for family dinners, dinner parties, and anything else you can imagine!
All you’ll need for this project is a paint tray, a paint roller, a sanding sponge, paper towel, and chalkboard paint!

Step 1: Clean off your table
Use a paper towel to clean your table. You’ll want to make sure to get any dust and debris off the table before the next step!

Step 2: Lightly sand your table
Take your sanding sponge and lightly sand the surface of the table. No need to kill yourself sanding away all the stain! You’ll only need to sand it down enough so that the paint can better adhere to the surface. Wipe off the sanded debris for a clean surface.
Step 3: Paint the table
Coat your paint layer in the chalkboard paint and apply a nice, even layer of chalkboard paint across the surface of the table. Wait about 30 minutes (or until your first coat is dry) and then apply another coat. Two coats is a good amount for this project and it’s a super quick process when you use a paint roller!
Step 4: Let your imagination run wild!
After the paint has completely dried (1h or more) you can start letting your inner artist out. Kyle shows you how to draw your place settings onto the table for a fun dinner party, but the possibilities for a chalkboard dining table are endless! Write out your dinner menu, play games like hangman during dinner, use it for beer pong, use it as a guest book – you get the idea.

Create place mats with chalkboard.
Or draw your beer pong game lines.
Or just use the table as a place for comments.

Love it! I'll be doing this to our RV table. Think of the fun, when it rains and you're stuck inside. And the color will work great with the rest of the decor! Oh yes what color did you use? Thanks.

Thank you for your Inspiration! I'm a Early Childhood Educator who now works at home. I call my house business, Inspire-Growing Positive Minds. We just moved from a two story, converted garage classroom into a one story house with my "classroom" in the living room area and small bedroom. Rearranging I have a table that I didn't want to "store" in the garage. Leaning against the wall and seeing your project converted it into a low living room table for use in the day with my kids and at night for the adults use. I love to recycle.
