DIY Dowel Decor: Recessed Can Light Shades

They're like crowns for your recessed can lights!

Down our hall upstairs we've got three recessed can lights and it's always seemed a missed design opportunity to me. Here's one at the top of the stairs outside our bedroom.

That's sweet boy Samson on the left there and if you'd like to learn how you too can create a paint-by-numbers-ish pet portrait, come search Flipping the Flip for Paint by Numbers!

You don't need much in terms of supplies:

  • various sized and shaped dowels
  • goof ring
  • sandpaper or sanding block
  • a hand or power saw
  • hot glue and hot glue gun
  • strong double-stick tape

Goof rings are the white plastic rings you see outside the fixture on the ceiling.

And then it's real simple! Cut the dowels any which way you'd like -- either have a plan or design mapped out or not (as I did), sand off any splintery parts, then with a dab of hot glue, attach them to the goof ring.

And voila! I had even found some clear acrylic dowels so there are a couple mixed in which glow when the lights are on.

A few small pieces of a sturdy double-stick tape (no need to go overboard on the tape) and the recessed can lights have taken on an entirely new look! It's like a chandelier now! The shadows these cast are super cool too.

So regal now, haha!

Each is different and it's a totally custom look!

I wouldn't have thought that hot glue would hold the dowl ends in place, especially when hanging upside down. 🤔

How long a time have you had them up on the light ring?
