    You have a lot of brown/beige/cream going on. I would paint the walls to liven it up, hang a curtain to complement the new wall color. What I would not do is paint those beautiful cupboards.

    Nancy: With the "busy" counter top, I would go for a solid neutral paint color. It'll look terrific!

    Hello there Nancy,,

    You appear to have a Country Style Kitchen. If the kitchen were mine and I only wanted to change the look of the cabinets, I would rub the doors down and use a coloured stain on them or perhaps paint the doors all over or the cabinet frame and centre panel of the doors or the outside frame of the doors and the centre panel, or change the handles and paint in the recessed area on the doors. You appear to have a beige or grey look to your tiles, so the world is your oyster as far as colour is concerned. Best wishes.

    Hi Nancy;

    I can't really tell from the picture but are they a golden oak color? we stained ours a darker color to go with our light colored walls, floors and countertops. I am not a fan of all white or all beige colors so we went with something a little darker. You can also paint them but with stain you can see the wood grain and beauty of the wood. Here is info for you.

    No! The cream distressed look is not out for kitchen cabinets! SO many pretty kitchen cabinet colors to choose from. I just painted mine a charcoal gray on the bottom and a very subtle white/gray on the top. You might want to check out any colors that are swirling around in your counter top. I have seen some pretty greens and blues for kitchen cabinets too! Check out Pinterest for lots of color ideas. I also like using General Finishes gel stain to darken the wood look as someone suggested.

    Here's a picture that inspired my kitchen cabinet colors!

    A simplified backsplash would do a lot. Even just simple white subway tile would modernize it. New bolder hardware would upgrade it too. :)

    Nancy, whatever you do please do not use Chalk Paint in the kitchen. It does NOT last and you will be doing a lot of tedious work on the cabinets. Painting is not that easy and not a 3-4 day project. I actually used stain on my cabinets. It is much more forgiving. There are tons of colors of stain. Use a good brand like General Finishes and they also make a bullet proof top coat.

    Good luck. Oh General Finishes are very helpful and will answer all your questions. I know i had a ton of questions.

    I'm a kichen designer and distressed cream is not out. Remember a quality cabinet is done in lacquer so the closest a diy can do is use oil based paints. Will outlast all paints. And yes chalk paint is awful for cabinets do not do chalk paint.

    White seems to be the most popular. Distressed cabinets popularity is fading. You can go with cream cabinets and add a brown glaze. That is very popular on sites I visit. Also, darker lowers with lighter uppers.

    I think that is a pretty look. It's your kitchen so if you love that look, I say go for it :)
