Without knowing your issue, in general I would keep it free of clutter and clean on a regular basis.

If it is a problem with the finish, you might try a food safe sealant.

  • Depending on the material they are made of, you can paint or resurface them. Give us a little more information and we can give you more details.

The answer depends on what the countertops are made of. But in general I find keeping clutter off the countertops is a key to keeping it looking neat and organized.

  • What material is it made of? Is it black granite?

  • Black is a frustrating color for counter tops, they always look spotty and dirty. What are your counters made of? What are your goals by improving them?

Hi Paul, not sure what your countertops are made of, but you can paint them, or use peel & stick tiles to change the look. I painted mine years ago until I could afford new ones, here's how I did it,

Lightly sand to rough the countertop up

Go to your paint store, tell them what you are painting, they will pick the proper paint and primer for you, you can even get the primer tinted for a better coverage

Once you have sanded, clean with TSP, then rinse and dry thoroughly,

Apply your primer coat, let it dry according to the instructions

Once the primer coat is dry, apply your paint coat, I would apply 2 or 3 as it will be stronger and thicker

Once your coats dry, you can apply a matte clear coat, either by spray or roll on, keep a small container of it under your sink for touch ups,( I never touched up) I had my counters like this for 12 years, until I could afford new ones.

I used a few uncolored glass cutting boards for protection. It held up very well. And only costs you the prices of the materials.

    Good luck!

  • Can you elaborate this further?

Hi Paul: If you paint it, I'm afraid that any scratches will make you pull your hair out icon What I would suggest, instead, is to put some decorative and colourful items on the counter, like flowers, or pretty items. If the problem is your countertop being dull, you might be able to shine it up. Here is a site that tells how to shine many types of surfaces on countertops, since you didn't indicate what yours is made of.

Left click on the one you want to look at and directions should come up for you. The X on the upper right will take you back to the original site. Also, check the ovals at the top.

    Good luck
