We've had a piano in the family for some years now, my parents handed it down to me in need of some TLC.

Here’s how I brought it back to life and also fit it in with our existing decor!

It's a lovely small piano, perfect for our dining room. The kids were super excited as we love music, so this was a perfect addition.

The black matt colour had become dull with chips in places, it had definitely seen better days.

To begin with I sanded it all down, removing the loose chips. This was a good start to see what I was working with.

The sanding made sure the piano base was ready to paint.

I started by painting the piano and I used a 4" sponge roller to apply primer. I did two coats of primer over the entire piano.

Remember to trust the process!

Everytime I use a primer I have doubts; primer is just a base so it doesn't give that “clean look” paint usually does, so at this point I was excited to get the paint on.

Over time, the wood base and the back of the piano had become loose and tacky so it was being held together with strong hold tape.

I peeled this off so I could sand and repair the damage.

I used new nails to attach the wood.

I created new holes avoiding the old ones. This is because the old holes were loose so making new ones ensures it stays stable.

I used “Egyptian cotton dulux paint 750l” from amazon.

The piano was coming together beautifully, a few layers to add and it was almost finished!

Once the board was fixed, I was able to paint the corners, hiding the previous black paint.

It's definitely a tedious task painting around the keys and hinges.

I used a piece of paper in gaps when painting. You can use tape, however, I prefer to use paper or just go for it.

And here we have the painted piano!

You can go even further than this by using stencils, adding moulding and so on.

I may add a name plate later on but I'm very happy with the finished product.

This sits perfectly in the dining room and really suits our decor.

What are your thoughts on this makeover?

Good choice of color. Looks great. The black or even woodgrain just looks old.

I have my Grandfather’s piano which is over 100 years old. The walnut is dry and needs a facelift. I may have to try this! Thank you!
